Mouse Embryonic Stem Cells Could Help Research Into Human Diseases
Two new studies led by scientists in the UK found enough similarities between some types of cells in mouse embryos and human embryonic stem cells that it may be possible to use them for research into human diseases. This could, for instance, make it easier to mass produce tissue for research purposes, and perhaps one day replace that damaged by diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and diabetes.

Mouse Infant Stem Cells Rebuild Brain Tissue
In a new experiment, nerve stem cells from infant mice were injected into mice with damaged brains, and appeared to restore memory.
Tests showed stem cells, the body's basic building blocks used for repair and growth, can turn into new brain cells and produce a chemical that protects existing damaged ones...
Prof Frank LaFerla, of the University of California, said: "Our research provides clear evidence that stem cells can reverse memory loss. "This gives us hope that stem cells someday could help restore brain function in humans suffering from a wide range of diseases and injuries that impair memory function."

Mouse Brain Stem Cells Capable Of Converting Into Blood Vessel Cells
The report by Fred H. Gage, Ph.D., and colleagues at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, CA, and Kumamoto University in Japan, appears in the July 15, 2004, issue of Nature.
Adult stem cells in the brain were proposed to be restricted to the generation of neurons and cells, such as glial cells, that support neuron function. Experiments over the past several years have raised the possibility that stem cells from the brain may be able to give rise to additional cell types, a phenomenon known as plasticity.
